Match Notes
Thinkers from Pythagoras to Nietszche have posited that -- at some point in non-finite time -- all things recur. The phenomenon of Eternal Recurrence is almost certainly not lost on the august band of scholars and gentlemen that comprise the EBTL, and very likely informs their play; still, an astonishment this day reigns, and bids us ask: what are the odds of one of history's most legendary battles, that of the Battle of Salamis, repeating itself with all the precision and inexorability of a Swiss timepiece, 2502 and a half years later? In such esteemed company as this, it seems unlikely I need here recount the famed skirmish in its entirety; my illustrious colleagues no doubt recall from their Herodotus that that legendary battle, fought between empires in the Saronic Gulf, off the coast of Athens, was marked by two chief peculiarities: the climatological oddity of the northwesterly winds the Greeks called "meltemi," and the way the Greeks, a people who were vastly outmatched on the baseline -- er, outnumbered in war vessels -- by their Persian counterparts, achieved victory only by deploying a sheer and merciless guile. Well friends, just like the Greeks before me, I knew I would be ill-served this day by a strict punch-for-punch strategy against the Xerxes to my Themistocles, Kleinman of York. And -- with a brand of subterfuge that would be familiar to any Corinthian in the 80's (the BC 480's, that is) -- a deep and above all *local* climatological knowledge (future historians will likely comment on the similarity of these two northwesterlies) was employed to handle this outlander, nay, this greenhorn drifter, nay, this East Coast arriviste, with nary a notion of our offshores -- with the same haughty mix of legerdemain and attacking spirit that trapped the Persian fleet off the coast of Thermopylae. What I am saying here, people, is that I attacked the net like a goddamned banshee today. To do otherwise against Xerxes on a windy day? Why, 'twould be to enter a world of Persian pain and imperial decline. Might as well consider a land war in Asia. Another classic battle of Kleinmanic and Polsbific civilizations, in short, with the usual amounts of delight and war cries (DO YOU BELIEVE?) pertaining thereto. (For aspirants hoping to achieve similar results against Kleinman of York, a mere re-reading of W. Kendrick Pritchett's seminal work, "Toward a Restudy of the Battle of Salamis..." will likely not suffice. One must add Athenian stratagems and Corinthian gambits: unholy feral squeals in between serves first and second; failed tweeners that make spectators clutch their reproductive organs in sympathetic reflex-response; and if and when Kleinman begins to unpack that seemingly infinite supply of ginger ale, mid-match, in a classic Easterner's ploy to daunt the parched? Meet his eyes, hold the gaze, reach into the racket bag and brandish a chilled, super-sized, 2L bottle of Canada Dry. Yes: it's what Themistocles would do.)

Partner Program players:
If you met up to hit around you can submit a 1st set 1-1 tie.
* If match is tied at 1 set a piece, players can play a 10-pt. tie-breaker to determine the winner.
* If a tie-breaker is played, a 7-6 score should be entered for the winner of the set.
* If players are limited on court time, it's best to play the 10-game pro set.
* Matches ending in a tie should still be reported even though W/L records don't get updated. The league can update the result when the
* Retired Flag: A retired player starts the match, but can't finish due to various reasons. A Win and a Loss is given in this situation.
* If a player doesn't show up, please report it here. We have a 3-strike policy for constant offenders.
* If a player cancels a match within 4 hrs of the match, please report it here.
* Players can play and report 1 rematch against a player still in their skill level.
* Matches with a score of 6-1, 6-2 or less will be flagged by the administrator. If you get 3 flags in a season, you are probably in the wrong
division and most likely will be moved to a different level during the season.
